Hungarian President János Áder on Monday congratulated Aleksandar Vučić on his re-election as Serbia’s president, the president’s office said.

“I am pleased to have witnessed that ties between Hungary and Serbia have become stronger in the recent past,” Áder said in his letter. He assured Vučić that Hungary remained open to strengthening ties, and he hailed the role of Serbia’s Hungarian community in solidifying those ties. He also assured Vučić of Hungary’s continued support for Serbia’s EU integration and for the country’s quickest possible accession.

Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó welcomed Vučić’s victory, and said that the election in Serbia was important for Hungary too. Szijjártó said on Facebook that the Serbian election results had an important effect on the future of Hungarians living in that country and on Hungarian-Serbian relations. “We have worked a lot on turning historic spite [between the countries] into a historic friendship,” he said. “We were happy to see that yesterday’s elections allow to continue that work. Not only did we achieve a historic victory, so did President Aleksandar Vučić, a great friend of Hungary’s,” he said, adding that he had recently talked on the phone with “my friend and counterpart Nikola Selaković”.

Katalin Novák, Hungary’s incoming president, said in her letter to Vučić: “The clear and solid support for you is a resolute expression of the opinion of voters in such unprecedentedly difficult and challenging times”. “As a Hungarian, it is reassuring to know that neighbouring Serbia will be led by a politician whom Hungary can regard as a friend and who is a committed supporter of the Hungarian community in Vojvodina,” she said in the letter posted on Facebook, wishing Vučić further success in performing his duties as president.
