A person died after being found in a burning outbuilding by firefighters late Monday night in Szeged, the deputy spokesperson of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management (OKF) informed MTI.
Imre Dóka reported that the 15-square-meter outbuilding, located in the yard of a residential house on Negyvennyolcas Street in Szeged, caught fire. One person was inside the property at the time.
Professional firefighters from the city arrived at the scene within minutes. They prevented the flames from spreading further and found the resident inside the structure. Unfortunately, despite the rapid intervention, the person’s life could not be saved.
The cause and circumstances of the fire are being investigated as part of a fire inspection procedure by the disaster management authority.
Dóka highlighted that the main causes of residential fires include the use of open flames, faulty heating devices, electrical faults, and smoking. He emphasized the importance of keeping a fire extinguisher on hand to control smaller fires and installing smoke detectors to enhance safety.
The fire department major noted that residential fires have already claimed three lives this year. On New Year’s Day, a fatality occurred in Törökbálint, followed by another in Szászberek the next day.
